Been thinking on the game a decent amount of time now and I am even more sold that Bellingham should go to 8. However maybe doing a pep and overthinking like made but I would also consider Wharton on for Rice. Rice is similar to Bellingham in that both are 8’s. Wharton is a 6. Gordon at LW, Foden/Eze 10, Jude or Rice at 8. Wharton/Mainoo 6. Walker/ Trent at RB.

Another winger City can take a look at, is Raphael Leao AC Milan and Portugal Winger

For about 5 minutes in the 1st half, when Foden went into midfield, we looked more like a tteam. It's just utter dogshit. Southgate is a bum, pure and simple. Total farce he has lasted this long. I imagine this is what being a Utd fan has felt like the last decade. Hyped up, big names, always outplayed. ETH could've been our manager today looking at the gap between Bellingham, who just struts around playing where he wants, and Trent n Rice, who seem to want to get in Stones' and Gueye's shorts with how deep they are.

I actually thought the commentary was correct about Kane, the team performance is not all on him but he is too telegraphed, too predictable and too laboured with his movements off the ball. He drops deep too often trying to help short term but it leaves us short of options as soon as we get the ball back because he can't make up the yards to get back in attack. He needs to be smarter about his energy management, smarter about his positioning, timing and choices, to find the space at the right times, to make up for the lack of pace and drop off in stamina. At this point, Southgate could use this bad start and the criticism to galvanise the players(shouldn't have come to it in this group but might as well use it now), it might suit this squad better to consider themselves one of the underdogs rather than one of the strongest teams, let them know we can't afford to be slacking in any department. Don't get outworked, don't get out thought, don't let other teams having more chemistry, playing more as a unit be the thing that lets you down.

I agree, Southgate is so safety first and tentative that it's rubbing off on the players but he's then expecting the players to express themselves as they would for their club. Also, it did seem like his subs were just about bringing fresh legs on, rather than tactical, which is way too basic a thought process at this level(panic? or out of ideas already?), against Denmark level opposition. That would explain Conner Gallagher. It would also explain why he brought a width keeping runner from the left(Eze) at the same time he was taking Kane off for Watkins. Who also runs in behind. Kane is the one who needs the runners from the wings to stretch the backline for him, like Eze, Gordon from the left, Saka, Bowen from the right(I'd like to see how Gordon, Kane, Bowen look if the wingers are given the instructions to stretch the game and use their pace and power). Watkins would be better with ball players, like Stones, Trent, Bellingham from deep and further up players like Palmer, Foden(when played wide) and Grealish if he was in the squad who have the ability to take the ball in tight spaces, turn players and find the right pass to free the striker. Those should be the starting points IMO, then you can tweak the balance during the game if it's not working, adding more runners or more tight space players depending on what's needed.

Honestly Foden just shouldn’t even feature for England unless he’s played as a 10 and given licence to operate in the half space. Best player in the premier league this season, but he is genuinely a mediocre player at left wing. In 40 caps for England I haven’t seen him have even one good game. There’s no time for big tactical changes now, but after the euros it’ll be interesting to see if a different coach can get the best out of him.

Foden's world class in and around the box, for a team that keeps the ball there, but on the wing or at CM he's a featherweight for City. England games lay it bare, but you steadfastly refuse to see it.
